HBO lamps (up to and including 200 W) are short arc lamps in which the discharge arc burns in an atmosphere of mercury vapor and inert gas at high pressure. A cold lamp however is not at overpressure.

Safety
Because of their high luminance, UV radiation and high internal pressure (when hot) HBO lamps may only be operated in enclosed lamp casings specially constructed for the purpose. Mercury is released if the lamp breaks. Special safety precautions must be taken.
